What is Course Ground Coffee?

Coffee is available in various forms for us to use at home. Course ground coffee is one of these forms. The term “coarse” refers to the size of the coffee grind. Fine ground coffee (similar to talcum powder), medium ground coffee (equivalent to table sugar), or coarse ground coffee (our focus today).

The consistency of coarse-ground coffee is akin to bread crumbs. Also, the uniformity of the coffee grinds has little effect on the coffee’s flavor. The objective of various coffee grinds is that you brew them in multiple ways. This is because they release flavor at various rates when added to hot water.

The Best Course Ground Coffee Brands Reviewed

We live in a prosperous period in coffee history, with more people than ever learning about the coffee they drink and the many brewing methods. Roasters understand their client’s needs and have created mixes for various brewing methods and varying sizes of ground coffee.

While having many options is a good thing, it might be challenging to choose your ideal grounds.

Some ground coffee options may have the words “French press” or “Cold Brew” in their titles. That doesn’t imply you can use them with one way of brewing. You can use them for either and get good results if the grind size is correct. The following list should aid in this procedure.

Bizzy Organic Cold Brew Coffee | Smooth & Sweet Blend | Coarse Ground Coffee | Micro Sifted | Specialty Grade | 100% Arabica : Best Overall Coarse Ground Coffee

Stone Street Cold Brew Coffee, Strong & Smooth Blend, Low Acid, 100% Arabica, Gourmet Coffee, Coarse Ground, Dark Roast, Colombian Single Origin : Best Coarse Ground Coffee With Low Acid

Brand: Stone Street Coffee Company

Origin: Colombia

Recommended ratio: 1:8

Compatible devices: Cold brewer, french press

Flavor/s: vanilla hazelnut, blueberry, caramel nut, chocolate, chocolate hazelnut, french vanilla, hazelnut, supremo

Roast level: Dark roast

Caffeinated: Yes

Size/s: 6.5 x 2 x 9 inches (16.5 x 5.1 x 22.9 centimeters)

Recommended uses: Cold brew

About This Item

Dark roasts come to mind when you think about cold brew coffees. They have the most intense and complex flavors.

Stone Street Cold Brew Coffee is an excellent example. With a cold coffee brew, the dark roast retains the body and flavor of the coffee bean. This contributes to the versatility of this cold brew, which tastes fantastic in black or with cream and sugar. The nutty and dark chocolate overtones make this a fantastic coffee for incorporating tastes like vanilla or hazelnut.

The beans that make this coffee are all 100% Arabica from Colombia. Colombian beans are well-rounded, balanced, and sweet. Because it is a single-origin coffee, it retains many Colombian beans’ distinct tastes.

You can also make a nice hot French Press or percolator. You don’t have to limit yourself to cold brew. Remember that the single-origin dark roasted coffees lost some flavor during roasting.

Last but not least, this coffee has USDA certification. The sole drawback is that the coffee’s decaffeination is via artificial means. This implies that it loses a significant amount of the rounded flavor profile of a regular or water-decaffeinated coffee.

Some Reader Questions Answered

Where Should I Buy Coarse Ground Coffee?

At first, you may not know where to buy coarse ground coffee. However, the locations of coarse coffee can be fascinating. Most local coffee shops offer public beans for sale and will gladly grind them for you. They will even provide instructions on how to use it when you explain what you need it for. Others already offer it regularly for sale ground and ready to use. The internet is your greatest option for finding coarsely ground coffee.

What is the Importance of Coffee Grind Sizes?

If your coffee tastes overly acidic, bitter, or sour, you are likely over or under-extracting your beans. One of the best ways to modify how you extract coffee is to change the grind size (along with brew time, water temperature, and coffee-to-water ratio).

You can classify coffee grinds as either coarse, extra coarse, or extra fine. Because finer coffee grounds have more exposed surface area, hot water can extract more coffee goodness from them faster. A coarser grind requires more extraction time.

In general, coarse grinds aren’t better or worse. The appropriate grind size depends on the technique of brewing your coffee. If you ground your coffee beans, you can adjust the grind size (more on that later). If you buy pre-ground coffee, use the specified size for your brewing method.

Also, if your coffee grinds are too coarse, you will under-extract, resulting in bitter coffee. If your grinds are too fine, you will over-extract, resulting in sour or acidic coffee. Additionally, you’ll find a sweet, complex coffee with the perfect balance of sugars, acids, and oils between these two extremes.

Which Devices are Compatible With Coarse Grind Coffee?

Coarse coffee is perfect for French press, cold brew, and percolator coffee. All three methods require the proper grind to utilize the equipment without “mechanical” problems or, worse, extraction concerns. The following devices are compatible with coarse grind coffee.

The French press

Although you can use any coffee in a French Press, it is best for coarser ground coffee. The mesh filter would allow little coffee ground particles to pass, ruining your coffee experience. Their contact time with hot water would be prohibitively long.

Depending on the coffee kind, you may detect excessive bitterness. You can shorten the contact period, but your drink’s composition is complex.

Percolator

The method of using a percolator is equivalent to using a French press. However, it adds some turbulence to the coffee grounds as the boiling water rises to the top regularly. As a result, utilizing a finer grind will extract off-flavors as well. Fine grind coffee, like the French press, provides a muddy brew. Therefore, using coarser coffee is essential for using a percolator without issues.

Cold Brew

This is, without a doubt, the preferred method to use with a coarse grind. Cold brewing is the opposite of French pressing. Using this method, many people who suffer from acid reflux can now experience the energizing effects of coffee.

Cold brewing with coarser coffee offers a more balanced extraction. In this process, you soak the grinds in water for several hours, usually 16 to 24. (I prefer 16 for dark mixtures and 20 for lighter ones).

The grind, in this case, could be the same as that employed in the French press. A little coarser is preferable, and you can also use whole beans. However, you must extend the cold brewing time.

Is Coarse Ground Coffee Stronger Than Other Grinds?

The caffeine content of coffee beans and a cup of ground coffee is the same. Nothing extraordinary happened during the grinding process to increase the caffeine content.

Also, finer coffee will make more contact with the water, extracting more caffeine than if the grind was coarser. Coarser coffee will have less contact with the water and extract less caffeine. However, cold brew has more caffeine than ordinary coffee.

Parting Words

There are always ways to brew high-quality coffee, whether you are an amateur or a professional and whether you have or do not have a coffee grinder or equipment. One of the most critical aspects of preparing a wonderful cup of coffee is knowing the grind size you need for your brewing process.

Fortunately, the companies mentioned in this article have good coffee grinders and the knowledge to make the ideal grounds for your needs. However, it’s never been easier to buy pre-ground coffee beans online. Alternatively, you can have your local coffee shop’s barista grind some beans to the grind size you require.

Suppose you’re still unsure which brand of coarsely ground coffee to try. We advise beginning with Bizzy Organic Cold Brew Coffee | Smooth & Sweet Blend | Coarse Ground Coffee | Micro Sifted | Specialty Grade | 100% Arabica . It has a smooth and sweet blend.
